Uhl Steel Furniture was founded in Toledo, Ohio, around 1898 by the Uhl brothers. The company was originally Uhl’s Cycle Emporium, a bicycle manufacturing and repair shop. Facing declining bicycle demand, the business pivoted to producing steel furniture for commercial and industrial use, incorporating as The Toledo Metal Furniture Company in 1904. They became famous for their functional, durable industrial furniture, particularly the "Toledo Stool," which featured a patented locked truss-rail steel leg assembly. This furniture is now recognized as a classic of the American Machine Age and is highly valued by collectors of the vintage industrial style!
