Children's Theatre Workshop Community T-Shirt (Discontinued)
The Children's Theatre Workshop (CTW) was established in 1954 as a result of a collaboration between the University of Toledo's chapter of the American Association of University Women and the Toledo Junior League. Its primary objective was to offer theatrical training to young people in the Toledo area. With a commitment to "theatre for children, by children," CTW has engaged youngsters in various aspects of theatre, encompassing acting, directing, playwriting, and technical crew roles.
As a nonprofit organization with 501c3 status, CTW fosters an inclusive environment that welcomes youth from diverse backgrounds, cultures, and lifestyles. Participants have the opportunity to explore numerous facets of theatre arts, develop essential life skills, and produce high-quality plays.
They provide a range of special programs dedicated to live theatre for the youth in Toledo and the surrounding regions. These programs teach theatrical techniques through an informal classroom structure while promoting self-expression and teamwork. In the classroom, students engage in theatre games, improv exercises, characterization studies, and self-exploration. Through these activities, they cultivate self-esteem, self-confidence, public speaking skills, and a deep appreciation for collaborative efforts—a set of life skills that extend beyond the realm of theatre.
In recent years, they have redoubled its efforts to deliver the finest theatre experience for young individuals. This includes curriculum enhancements, regular production of student-written work through the Ensemble's Devising program, ongoing renovations of the theatre space and classrooms, and a significant expansion of the summer program. Collaborations with various organizations in the Toledo area have also been a focus, resulting in theatrical performances and workshops in partnership with the Collingwood Arts Center, Toledo Botanical Gardens, Toledo Museum of Art, Girl Scouts of Western Ohio, Old West End Festival, and others.
CTW's dedication and achievements have garnered recognition within the community. The organization has received accolades from the Toledo Council, Toledo mayors, and the Lucas County Commissioners for its impactful work with young people in the theatre.
During the month of July, $5 from every sale of the limited-edition t-shirt was donated to Children’s Theatre Workshop. The funds raised went toward their 2023-2024 productions, including Sherlock Holmes and the Baker Street Irregulars, SpongeBob The Musical, as well as original works by the students of CTW!
