In an effort to revitalize downtown Toledo after Tiedtke's and Lamson's closed their stores, Toledo opened the Portside Festival Marketplace in 1984. The marketplace was 100,000 square feet and held restaurants and over eighty shops selling flowers, kites, candies, toys, ice cream, t-shirts, souvenirs, and more. Portside did, for a time, bring new life and excitement to downtown drawing in 4.2 million visitors in the first year. Unfortunately, attendance dropped and stores started pulling out of the marketplace. Portside closed its doors in 1990 but still brings back fond memories for the Toledoans that experienced its excitement.
